Hot Spirited Sauce

This is a nice alternative to the traditional hard sauces as it is served hot. Besides being used as a sauce for plum pudding, it can be poured over sponge cake, gingerbread and even ice cream for a simple dessert.


1 cup packed brown sugar
2 tbsp cornstarch
1-1/2 cup water
1/4 cup dark rum or brandy
1/4 tsp nutmeg
2 tbsp butter or margarine
1 tsp nutmeg


In heavy saucepan, mix together sugar and cornstarch. Stir in water. Bring to boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat, stir in rum, nutmeg and butter, simmer for 2 minutes. Stir in vanilla. Serve hot.
