Chocolate Macaroons (aka Worm or Mud Cookies)

Doesn’t everyone have one of these recipes somewhere? Usually, written on a small small recipe card copied from a church or community spiral recipe book! They are fun to make, kids love them, they use cocoa and not chocolate and they are no bake!  Yes, the one cookie you can make which doesn’t heat your kitchen up from a hot oven. I am sure these cookies are made more often in the summer than the winter for that very reason.

1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup shortening
5 Tbsp cocoa powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups rolled oats
1 cup coconut

Stir all  ingredients, except the rolled oats and the coconut, together in a saucepan and bring to boil. Remove from heat, add remaining two ingredients and stir. Cool a little.

Drop by spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets or waxed paper on counter.

Takes 1-2 hours to set.
